Humans, like many other mammals, have a system known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS consists of cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body’s nervous system, including the brain, the spinal cord, and the immune system. This system helps regulate numerous important bodily functions such as sleep, immune response, pain and mood (Endogenous cannabinoids play an important role in the physiology and behavioral expression of stress responses).
As the name would indicate, the system relies on the transmission of endocannabinoid compounds around the body to trigger different responses. The use of CBD can directly assist in this function by stimulating this system. The function of endocannabinoids, to control and regulate stress response, is irrefutable science. For example, activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, including the release of glucocorticoids, is the fundamental hormonal response to stress that is controlled through the ECS.
Orthodox Stress Relief
Generally, if a patient is prescribed medication for stress relief, the medication will fall into one of five categories: Sedative (CNS depressant) medications, Buproprion (BuSpar), Antidepressant medications, or Beta Blockers. Each one of these, although very effective in the fight against various types of stress related illnesses, comes with its fair share of well documented side effects and down sides that can cause complications if left unmonitored.
HEALTH CONDITIONS WHERE CBD CAN SUPPORT TREATMENT
Studies have shown some benefits for other forms of stress, such as:
- Common stress disorder
- Social anxiety disorder (SAD)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Anxiety-induced insomnia.
